1. LAST CALL FOR INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATOR PROPOSALS

The ALS is still accepting proposals from scientists who wish to conduct research at the facility as independent investigators during June-September 1998. The deadline for proposals is January 15, 1998. Because the period scheduled in our last proposal cycle (December 1997 to April 1998) was short, all proposals that were not granted beam time for that period will automatically roll over to this proposal cycle.

The proposal form for independent investigators is available in Portable Document Format (PDF) on the Web. Information on the proposal process is available at the same location.

To request a proposal form by mail, contact:
Elizabeth Saucier, ALS Administrator
Tel: (510) 486-6166
Fax: (510) 486-4960
Email: alsuser@lbl.gov

For information on beamlines available to independent investigators, contact: Gary Krebs, ALS User Services Tel: (510) 486-7727 Fax: (510) 486-4102 Email: g_krebs@lbl.gov

2. WORKSHOP TO CHART NEW DIRECTION FOR SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
(contact: nvsmith@lbl.gov)

Patricia Dehmer, Associate Director for Basic Energy Sciences at DOE, and Berkeley Lab Director Charles Shank are sponsoring a three-day workshop to be held at Berkeley Lab from March 23 through March 25, 1998. The workshop's purpose is to formulate a vision for the ALS scientific program into the twenty-first century and to make recommendations that will result in a road map for the implementation of that program.

The bulk of the ALS science workshop will be spent in breakout groups. At this time, the likely topics for the breakout groups are

- strongly correlated materials
- nanostructures/semiconductors
- environmental and earth sciences
- polymers and soft matter
- biosciences
- catalytic materials/surface chemistry
- magnetic materials
- AMO physics/chemical dynamics
ALS users and interested persons are welcome to attend and participate in the workshop, which will begin Monday morning and will adjourn Wednesday afternoon. Registration forms will be mailed to users and other potential participants within the next week. You may register by completing and returning the form or by sending email to alsuser@lbl.gov with the following information: your name, your institutional affiliation, your complete postal address, your telephone and fax numbers, and the breakout session in which you would like to participate. If you have questions about registration, please contact the ALS User Office (phone, 510-486-7745; fax, 510-486-4773; email, alsuser@lbl.gov). The registration must be received no later than March 9. There will be a nominal registration fee, which will include lunches Monday through Wednesday and a dinner Monday evening. Any suggestions regarding the workshop may be directed to Neville Smith (nvsmith@lbl.gov).

3. OXYGEN RESEARCH IN NEW SCIENCE HIGHLIGHT
(contact: cyng@ameslab.gov)

A new science highlight about oxygen research reported in the last issue of ALSNews ("The Inside Story on Oxygen") is now available on the Web. It includes spectra produced in pulsed-field ionization photoelectron spectroscopy studies of the electronic structure of oxygen cations.

4. ALS ACTIVITY REPORT NOW AVAILABLE
(contact: alsuser@lbl.gov)

The Advanced Light Source Activity Report for 1996/97 is now being mailed to members of the ALS community. This year's report illustrates the importance and variety of the ALS scientific program with a selection of research results. The report also summarizes our operations and ongoing research and development efforts, highlights educational outreach efforts and special events, and provides a reference for the beamlines scheduled for completion by the end of 1998.

If you received an Activity Report for 1995, your report should be on its way to you. If you would like to request an Activity Report, send email to alsuser@lbl.gov with the words "Send Activity Report" in the subject line. Include your name and complete postal address in the body of the message.

5. PROCEDURE CENTER ON THE WEB
(contact: rcjones@lbl.gov)

The ALS Procedure Center has a new Web site available to users and staff who connect to it from Berkeley Lab computers. To visit the site, point your browser to http://www-als.lbl.gov/als/procedures/. The site features PDF (Portable Document Format) files for commonly used ALS procedures and checklists.

For all procedures on the Web, the PDF files will always contain the most up-to-date versions. Hard copies printed from the Web should be destroyed after use to avoid confusion with future versions. The new Web pages are maintained by ALS Procedure Center Manager Rita Jones (rcjones@lbl.gov).

6. OPERATIONS UPDATE
(contact: rmmiller@lbl.gov)

Beam reliability for November 24 -December 23 was 97.5% overall and 98.2% for user shifts. All outages were of short duration.
