Tips for Using the Online Compendium

Using Adobe Acrobat Reader

To view the abstracts in this online Compendium, you will need Acrobat Reader (version 3.0 or higher), which you can download free from the Adobe Web Site.

Viewing PDF Files Within Your Browser Window
Netscape
Once you have installed Acrobat Reader, be sure to drop the PDFViewer plug-in into the Netscape plug-ins folder. (The Plug-Ins folder should be inside the same folder as the Netscape application.) This will allow you to view PDF files within your browser window. If the plug-in is not installed, your browser will download each abstract you select for viewing to your computer's hard drive and open it in a window outside your browser.

Microsoft Internet Explorer
If you are using Internet Explorer (IE) 3.X, you should be able to view PDF files within the browser without any extra steps. However, if you are using IE 4.0 or higher, you may need to download the ActiveX Control Update for Adobe Acrobat in order to view PDF files within the browser window or use search functions in Acrobat Reader. Check for the latest information for IE users on the Adobe Acrobat download pages when you download Acrobat Reader.

Viewing Detailed Visuals or Unusual Type

Some abstracts contain type or visuals that will not display properly at actual size. To see greater detail, you can do one of two things:
  • Print the abstract from your browser or Acrobat Reader window. Text and figures will print at their full resolution (usually 300 dots per inch -- 120 dots per cm -- or less) unless your printer has a lower resolution.
  • Use the magnifying glass tool displayed in the toolbar at the top of the abstract to enlarge the screen image. To decrease magnification, use the demagnify tool . This tool is accessible separately in the toolbar in some versions of Acrobat Reader, or if you have the magnifying glass selected, you can switch to the demagnify tool by holding down the Option key (Macintosh) or the Control key (Windows).
