Chemicals
| Overview |
Anyone using chemicals should be aware of
the potential hazards that the chemicals may present to themselves,
other users who may be unfamiliar with the chemicals, equipment,
and the environment.
Chemicals must be properly transported, labelled, stored,
and handled at the ALS, as noted below. Only the smallest amount
necessary of hazardous chemicals should be brought to the lab
or used. |
| Advisories |
ALS User Advisory 20: ESG Instrumentation Laboratory 2-457:
Chemical Hygiene and Safety Requirements |
| Guidelines |
Users are required to follow the rules for chemical hygiene
and safety in Berkeley
Lab's Health and Safety Manual (Pub-3000) and in Berkeley
Lab Chemical Hygiene and Safety Plan (Pub-5341). |
| Transport |
Users must arrange for all hazardous materials
to be shippied to the ALS prior to the start oa an expeiment.
Tranportation of hazardous materila by private vehicle, Berkeley
shuttle buses, or any other Berkely Lab mavehicle is not permitted.
Hazardous materials to be shipped to or from the ALS must
be packaged and handled in accordance with the U.S. Department
of Transportation guidelines. All hazardous material shipments
must include pertinent Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs).
For more information, contact the Operations Coordinator (ext.
7464). |
| Access to the Chemistry Laboratory |
The Chemistry Laboratory is available at all times
to trained users. The key is the same as the key to the ALS experiment
floor. To use the lab, users must read a training sheet and contact
the Experiment Setup Coordinator for additional training (ext.
5527). |
| Storage |
All chemicals to be used on the ALS experiment
floor must be listed on the Experiment Form before an experiment
begins. The ALS has limited space available for the short-term
storage of flammable and corrosive liquids.
- Do not use fume hoods as storage areas for
chemicals.
- Do not store chemicals in refrigerators labeled for food
storage.
- Do not store chemicals near sinks, unless the chemicals
are in a secondary container.
|
| Labeling |
All containers (including lab glassware and plastic
squeeze bottles) must have hazard warning labels. Blank labels
and labels preprinted for some common chemicals are in the Chemistry
Laboratory. The label must:
- Show the name of the material.
- State the material's physical and health hazards.
- Give the name of the responsible person, and a phone number
where they can be reached.
- Be legible and prominently displayed.
