X-ray imaging at the ESRF including future upgrade

The current and future ESRF X-ray imaging beamlines offer unique instruments for studying complex systems from the microscale to the nanoscale. Each beamline developed a specific focus in terms of application fields and corresponding observed variables, experimental techniques and energy range. These capabilities are currently strongly enhanced by the ESRF Upgrade Programme. A (r)evolution reaching towards new frontiers in X-ray imaging is anticipated with the so-called Phase II focusing on a major upgrade of the ESRF storage ring: the increased coherent photon flux density especially at higher energies will allow to reach for unpredented spatio-temporal resolution. Selected case studies with the existing source will be presented such as crack-propagation in Si wafers by means of single-bunch imaging, low-dose in vivo tomography and nanoCT of solid oxide fuel cells.
