On the one hand, the development of attosecond pulses by high-harmonic generation has led to the development of a new class of pump-probe experiments, where electron dynamics in atomic and molecular systems is studied on its natural – attosecond – timescale. On the other hand, the use of ultrashort pulse sources in the XUV/X-ray domain has stimulated the development of novel approaches for studying time-resolved molecular dynamics that are based on diffractive properties of high energy electrons, rather than the relation between the molecular structure and the photo-absorption spectrum. Accompanying both of these developments, complementary studies of strong-field ionization provide further information on atomic and molecular structure and dynamics that may be considered to be extremely promising. In my talk, I will present an overview of our recent experimental efforts in this area. I will discuss experiments that illustrate the importance of multi-electron effects in strong-field ionization [1] that provide a motivation for future attosecond pump-probe experiments on charge migration in molecules, and will discuss the present status of attosecond experiments on molecular systems [2, 3], as well as experiments aimed at using the diffraction of high energy electrons to study time-dependent molecular dynamics [4].
