Title:
Electronic Structure and Proton Transfer in hydrogen bonded, pi stacked and van der waals complexes

Abstract:
Tunable vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation at the chemical dynamics beamline@ALS in conjunction with molecular beams and electronic structure calculations are being used to probe electronic structure and dynamics of hydrogen-bonded, pi stacked and van der waals systems in biomolecules and water clusters. How exciton energy deposited in an argon cluster is transferred to softly ionize doped water clusters, leading to the formation of nonfragmented water cluster ions will be discussed. (1) Following on, ionization induced proton transfer with and without hydrogen bonds will be discussed. I will highlight our recent report of an efficient intramolecular ionization-induced proton transfer across a 1,3-dimethyluracil dimer, a model pi-stacked system with no hydrogen bonds (2), and discuss how micro-hydration affects proton transfer in this system. Finally, future plans of using lasers in conjunction with synchrotron radiation to probe photoionization dynamics will be described.
