Title: L10 ordered FePt-based bit patterned media and magnetic coupling phenomena in ferrimagnetic Fe-Tb based heterostructures
Stoichiometric FePt in the tetragonal L10 phase, for which a very high uniaxial magneto- crystalline anisotropy (Ku= 6.6×107 erg/cm3) is associated to a theoretical thermal stability of magnetization for grains with size as small as 3 nm, represent one of the leading candidates for the next generation high-density recording media. In this work, FePt/Cu bilayers sputter-deposited on amorphous thermally oxidized Si(100) substrates were transformed to the chemically L10 ordered phase by rapid thermal annealing (RTA). It was found that for thin film samples, which were RTA processed at 600°C for 30 s, the addition of Cu strongly favors the L10 ordering and (001) texture formation, which results in a strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Nanoimprint lithography was employed to pattern these films into nanodot arrays. Their structural and magnetic properties will be presented.
Furthermore, an overview of our activities on ferrimagnetic Fe-Tb thin films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and heterostructures build with ferromagnetic layers will be presented.
