Accelerator Physics Challenges of Free-Electron Lasers - Experience with the LCLS and Design Efforts Towards the NGLS
The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at SLAC has been a tremendous success, and recent experience with its operation is now pointing the way to the next generation light source (NGLS) at LBNL. We introduce some free-electron laser (FEL) concepts, highlight some of the most challenging FEL and accelerator physics issues, and briefly review the present design and performance of the NGLS.
