Fast magnetic domain wall creation in ferromagnetic nanowires

In ferromagnetic bodies domain walls separate uniformly magnetized regions. These walls can be manipulated by magnetic fields and spin-polarized electric currents. Ideas of memory[1] and logic devices[2] using domain walls in nanostructured ferromagnets have led to a need for a good understanding of their dynamics under the influence of fields and currents. For building efficient devices the fast and reliable creation of specific domain walls is crucial..
We study the fast creation as well as the mutual annihilation of vortex domain walls in NiFe nanowires. The reliable creation of single and multiple walls as well as the generation of walls with defined chirality by short current pulses is presented [3]. Quasistatic experiments with a wide variety of parameters give a good insight into the occurring processes in external fields while time resolved X-ray microscopy of the creation process yields a spatio-temporal analysis of the creation process on the intrinsic time and length scales.
