ALS Strategic Plan

strategic plan

The ALS Strategic Plan (2009-2016) was developed with users and other stakeholders at the Advanced Light Source to ensure that our facility and team remain scientific and technical leaders in synchrotron science. The Plan encompasses the needs of the scientific community as well as our responses to meeting those needs through development of our synchrotron, beamlines, endstations, and other resources, including people and technologies, in support of, "Users doing outstanding science in a safe environment."

ALS Strategic Plan Updates

The Strategic Plan is constantly reviewed—and revised as necessary—to reflect completed projects, emerging challenges, and changing priorities. Peer reviews, from the Triennial Review by the Department of Energy (DOE), to periodic internal reviews initiated by ALS management, to workshops at the User Meeting, inform and update the Strategic Plan. New opportunities arise for renewal of ALS infrastructure with new programs such as DOE's Energy Innovation Hubs. Users can bring new resources to help us build instruments that make their science possible. Most importantly, the Office of Science's Basic Energy Sciences (BES) Program Office strongly supports ALS in remaining at the forefront of light sources globally and makes investments in our future so that we can meet BES missions. Updates to the Plan, detailing progress on projects, milestones achieved, and technical information, are discussed annually at the ALS User Meeting. For information on our progress in meeting our goals, download the Director's Update from the 2012 ALS User Meeting.
