All users are required to take safety training before they may begin work at the ALS. It is the responsibility of the Principal Investigator and the Experimental Lead to ensure that all members of the team receive proper safety training before an experiment begins.

Special consideration is available for NSLS users who have completed, and are up-to-date with, their safety training, NSLS Safety Module;  they may take a brief equivalency course ALS 1010: Site-Specific Safety at the ALS in lieu of the complete safety training  in ALS 1001: Safety at the ALS. These users must present documentation upon arrival at the ALS showing that  they have completed NSLS Safety Module; see Acceptable NSLS Safety Documentation for examples.

Most training is available online. Please use the non-LDAP login and enter your badge number as your Employee ID. If you do not yet have a badge, you may leave that field blank.

Facility Safety Training Required for ALL Users

• ALS 1001: Safety at the ALS - (expires after two years)
  or ALS 1010: Site-Specific Safety at the ALS (see above note about NSLS  equivalency) (expires after two years)
• ALS 1005: Access to the ALS - (expires after two years)
• EHS 0470: General Employee Radiation Training (GERT) - (expires after two years)

Special Training Required for Some Users

Additional online training courses for specific hazards and/or equipment are available for ALS users. This training is experiment-specific and will be prescribed from the review of your ESS. Some of this training may be provided by Berkeley Lab and be available on-line. See the chart below for listing of the more common courses.

In addition to these standardized courses, you will also receive beamline-specific training. Since there are a variety of beamlines at the ALS, there are many ways in which this is given and documented. Consult your beamline contacts when scheduling your beam time to get more information.
